"Simultaneous color contrast" and the brain's "color constancy" mechanism: Although two squares have the exact same physical color (RGB value), because they are embedded in red and yellow backgrounds respectively, retinal cells experience lateral inhibition when stimulated by strong background colors. This causes the brain to automatically "subtract" the background color when processing visual signals and spontaneously fill in the complementary color of the background color on the squares. This top-down visual compensation mechanism, triggered by the environment, forcibly distorts our psychological perception of the actual color of an object's surface, thus creating a color illusion where the physical colors are the same but the visual perceptions are completely different.
