Normal human color vision depends on three types of cone cells in the retina: red-sensitive (L), green-sensitive (M), and blue-sensitive (S). Blue-green color blindness is an extremely rare congenital or acquired color vision deficiency, essentially caused by a lack of normally functioning blue-sensitive (S) cone cells in the retina. Due to the lack of photoreceptor cells capable of capturing short wavelengths of light (approximately 420-440 nanometers), individuals with blue-green color blindness cannot correctly distinguish between blue and green, or yellow and purple.
